It opened in 1973 as Sears Tower and at 442 meters remained the world's tallest building for a quarter century. Its real importance is engineering, not looks: Fazlur Rahman Khan's bundled tube system, with nine square tubes ending at different heights, lightened the structure, cut cost, and now underpins most super-tall towers worldwide. On the 103rd floor The Ledge boxes project 1.3 meters beyond the facade with glass floors.
