Lincoln Park
Ideal: Ideal for nature, walking, family outings, lake views, and a calm city break.
Stretching eleven kilometers along the lake, it is the city's largest park. But the land was a cemetery until the 1860s: graves were moved because of disease risk, yet one family tomb could not be relocated and the Couch mausoleum still sits in the grass. Lincoln Park Zoo opened in 1868, among North America's oldest, and admission remains free — its first residents were a pair of swans gifted from New York.
