Mont-Saint-Michel

The abbey's founding dates to 708 and Bishop Aubert's dream; the structure grew layer by layer on the rock over centuries into its present form. The surrounding bay has some of Europe's strongest tides: water levels shift by up to 14 metres, and the sea moves fast enough that walking unguided on the flats is dangerous. In 2014 the old causeway was removed and replaced by a bridge so tides could surround the island again. The permanent population on the rock is around thirty people.

Does it really become an island twice a day?
One of Europe's largest tidal ranges occurs here, with water levels shifting by up to 14 m. At high tide the sand flats disappear completely and the rock becomes a genuine island.
Why was the old causeway removed?
The 1879 embankment blocked the currents, so the bay silted up fast and the island was becoming attached to the mainland. In 2014 it was replaced by a stilted bridge that lets water flow through, restoring the natural tidal cycle.
Is it safe to walk out onto the sand alone?
No. Besides the fast-rising tide there are patches of wet sand that behave like quicksand. Walks across the bay are only made with licensed guides, and that rule is a serious safety measure.
