St. Augustine Historic District

Founded by the Spanish in 1565, it is the oldest continuously lived-in European settlement on the U.S. mainland — 42 years before Jamestown and 55 before Plymouth. Castillo de San Marcos, which guarded the town, was built of coquina, a soft stone of compressed seashells that absorbed cannonballs instead of shattering, so the fort was never taken by force. Flagler College, now a university building, opened in 1888 as a luxury hotel and still holds original Tiffany stained glass.
