Miami Beach

Ideal: Ideal for beaches, nightlife, photography, city walks, and tropical holidays.

Much of the area is not a natural island: from 1913 mangrove swamp was cleared and filled with sand dredged from the bay. The Art Deco district holds nearly eight hundred buildings from the 1930s and 40s — the densest Art Deco cluster in the world; when developers wanted to demolish it in the 1970s, Barbara Capitman's campaign saved them. The famous pastels are not original: structures started white and beige and were repainted in the 1980s with designer Leonard Horowitz's palette.
