Hemingway lived here from 1931 to 1939, and today nearly sixty cats descended from a six-toed cat given by a captain roam his house. In 1982 the town declared itself the Conch Republic and 'declared war' on the United States to protest a border checkpoint, surrendered one minute later, and asked for post-war aid — the episode is still celebrated every year. Mallory Square hosts a sunset ceremony each evening.
