This 1.5-kilometer strip became a global symbol of neon-pastel style through Miami Vice in the 1980s. Buildings here are protected: Art Deco district rules forbid facade changes, so most hotels still show outlines from eighty years ago. The most photographed building is Casa Casuarina, the mansion where Gianni Versace was killed on the steps in 1997; it now operates as a hotel and restaurant.
