The sand here is almost pure quartz carried from the Appalachians over thousands of years, so it stays strikingly white and does not heat up in the sun — you can walk barefoot comfortably. The local aquarium is really a rescue center: Winter the dolphin, who lost her tail and received a prosthetic, lived here and inspired the film Dolphin Tale. At Pier 60 a street-performer festival starts two hours before sunset every evening.
