Blue Lagoon

It is not a natural spring: the lagoon formed from discharge water of the Svartsengi geothermal plant, which began operating in 1976. People started bathing here in the early 1980s after a psoriasis patient noticed his skin improved after washing in the water, and the facility was built afterward. The milky blue color comes from silica and algae in the water; temperature is kept at 37–39°C and the entire volume is fully renewed every two days. During Sundhnúkur volcanic activity in 2023–24 the site was evacuated several times.

Is the Blue Lagoon a natural hot spring?
No. The lagoon formed in 1976 from wastewater of the nearby geothermal plant. When people noticed the water helped their skin, it opened to the public in the 1980s and was later developed into a resort.
Why is the water blue?
The colour comes not from dye but from silica particles in the water reflecting sunlight. The same silica settles as the white mud used for the face masks.
Why is showering before entry compulsory?
All Icelandic pools require a soap shower without a swimsuit. Chlorine levels are kept low, so hygiene depends entirely on that rule and it is strictly enforced.
