Why is the saxophone associated with this town?

Its inventor, Adolphe Sax, was born in Dinant in 1814. Giant saxophone sculptures representing different countries line the bridge, and his birthplace is now a museum.

How do you get up to the citadel?

By a 408-step staircase or by cable car. The citadel sits on a cliff 100 m above the river, commanding the whole valley.

What happened to the town in the First World War?

In August 1914 German troops killed more than 600 civilians and burned much of the town. The centre you see today is largely post-war reconstruction.
