The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ideal: Ideal for art, history, museum visits, and cultural itineraries.

Founded in 1870, the museum holds nearly 1.5 million works, and an entire gallery is occupied by a real Egyptian temple: the 15th-century BC Temple of Dendur, dismantled before the Aswan Dam flooded it, gifted to the United States by Egypt in 1965, and rebuilt here. The Costume Institute hosts the Met Gala every May. Admission has an unusual split: New York State residents may pay what they wish, while other visitors pay a fixed rate.
