To count officially as Broadway a theater must seat more than 500, and most of the 41 theaters that qualify sit not on Broadway itself but on nearby streets. The oldest is the Lyceum, dating to 1903. Leaving a single bare bulb lit in an otherwise dark house is a century-old tradition, explained as both safety and a way not to disturb the theater's ghosts.
