University of Tartu
Ideal: Good for culture, local city atmosphere, and calm walks.
The university was founded in 1632 by Swedish King Gustav II Adolf and remained Estonia's intellectual center. The attic of the 1809 neoclassical main building holds a student prison called the kartser: students who fought, failed to pay debts, or tried to duel were locked here for days, and the walls are covered with their writings and drawings. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2024. Nearby, the Barclay House is considered the town's little Pisa for its noticeably tilted stance.

Is the student prison real?
Yes. The karzer in the attic of the main building held students who broke the rules in the 19th century. Their drawings and inscriptions are still on the walls.
What is the leaning house in the city?
The Leaning House on Barclay Square tilts noticeably because part of its foundation rests on the old city wall and part on soft ground. It now houses an art museum.
