San Diego Balboa Park

Ideal: Ideal for museums, parks, architecture, family outings, and relaxed city discovery.

Larger than Central Park, the ornate Spanish Colonial buildings were never meant to last: they were built with temporary materials for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and scheduled for demolition afterward. When residents pushed back, the structures were kept and later rebuilt in permanent materials. The park holds nearly seventeen museums. San Diego Zoo also grew out of the fair, founded with animals left homeless after the exhibition.
