Hofburg Palace

Ideal: Great for a dense but efficient culture route in the center.

The Habsburgs ruled from here from 1279 to 1918 — more than 600 years — and Austria's president still has offices in one wing. Because each ruler added a section, the complex has no single style: across 18 wings and 19 courtyards it stacks Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, and neoclassical layers. Inside, the Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum, Silver Collection, Spanish Riding School, and the National Library's Baroque Hall are visited as separate experiences.

Did you know?

How big is the Hofburg?

It has 18 wings, 19 courtyards and more than 2,600 rooms — less a palace than a city in itself. It still houses the office of Austria's president today.

Did Empress Sisi have any little-known habits?

Sisi kept a private gymnasium in the palace and had rings and bars fitted into doorframes to maintain her figure. Caring for her nearly ankle-length hair took hours every day.

Why is the Spanish Riding School "Spanish"?

The name comes from the Iberian ancestry of its horses. With over 450 years of unbroken tradition in classical dressage, the school opens its morning training sessions to visitors.

Why go?

  • To feel imperial history in central Vienna
  • For the Sisi Museum and palace collections
  • Because it links easily into city walking routes
