Flying with sports equipment: from booking to baggage reclaim
A sports bag is not automatically standard baggage. Size, weight, advance booking, packing and battery rules can differ by carrier and aircraft.

Airlines set their own baggage rules. Sports equipment may be included in one fare, charged separately in another, or refused on a small aircraft because of dimensions or capacity.
Measure and weigh the packed item before buying. Confirm reservation, capacity, connecting-carrier and damage procedures, not only whether the equipment is generally accepted.
Questions before purchase
- Is it included in the allowance or charged separately?
- What are the packed size and weight limits?
- Is advance reservation required?
- Does every operating carrier accept it?
- Is a hard case, box, valve adjustment or disassembly required?
Treat batteries separately
For e-bikes, drones, cameras or electronic sports devices, baggage rules are only half the check. IATA says spare batteries and power banks belong in carry-on baggage with terminals protected against short circuit.
Airline approval may be required above 100 Wh; batteries over 160 Wh are usually not accepted on passenger aircraft. An unreadable Wh rating can result in refusal.

- Photograph the item and packaging before handover.
