Pedestrian street suitable for solo strolling in Lisbon

For your first solo trip, choosing a city with easy transportation, lively central neighborhoods and a variety of accommodation options makes it easier. A three- or four-night single-city trip is better to test your own rhythm, rather than a very remote or complex route.

The security plan should be based on communication and transportation backups, not fear. Let a relative know where you are staying; See the night return from the day and do not carry all the money/documents in one place.

How to choose the first city?

  • Make airport-center transportation simple.
  • Make sure your accommodation is close to public transportation.
  • Find at least two things you want to do during the day and evening.
  • Feel in control of language and connection.

Accommodation control

Look at recent comments from solo visitors, not just the overall score. Check the night reception, room lock, locker, street lighting and walking from the station. The cheapest bed is not a savings if the night requires expensive taxis.

Sociability and boundaries

A walking tour, small group workshop or day event makes it easy to meet people. Do not give your accommodation room number, entire route or document information to the person you just met. Don't leave your drink unattended and don't depend on anyone else to return.

emergency backup

  • Spare card and small cash in separate place.
  • Offline map and hotel address.
  • Local emergency number and consular information.
  • Powerbank for phone.
  • Basic health and insurance documents.
