Prague travel guide: visiting the historical center without getting stuck in the crowds

Many places in the center of Prague are within walking distance. The difficulty is not in cultivating the sights, but in managing the crowds that gather in the same narrow axes. Seeing the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square early in the morning allows you to devote the rest of the day to quieter neighborhoods.
Three full days are sufficient for a first visit. The west bank where the castle is located, the Old Town-New Town line and the Vyšehrad-Vinohrady axis can be covered on separate days.

It is more comfortable to ascend to the castle area by tram and descend towards Malá Strana than to walk in the opposite direction. On the day of the Old Town, move a few blocks away from the main square and spend time in the quieter courtyards and alleyways.

Where to stay?
Staré Město is the most central choice, but prices and night noise may increase. Nové Město is practical in terms of transportation. Vinohrady offers a more local evening within short public transport distance from the centre. The proximity of the accommodation to the tram line reduces the need for a taxi to the door.
Tram and pedestrian transportation
The tram network is especially useful for exiting the castle and surrounding neighbourhoods. Verify up-to-date information with Prague public transport as ticket availability and transfer conditions may change. The fastest method in the Old City is often walking.
Food, beverage and peak hours
- Check the price of tables with a view on the main square on the menu before ordering.
- Leave the bridge and astronomical clock area early in the morning or late in the evening.
- Don't just stick to the historical center to try local cuisine.
- Leave transportation allowance to the venue on a booked concert or theater night.
