Although Istanbul's two main passenger airports serve the same city, they are not two interchangeable terminals. IST is in the northwest of the European side, SAW is around Pendik-Kurtköy on the Anatolian side. The small difference in ticket price may lose its meaning when city transfer time and night transportation are added.
Don't make your decision based solely on the kilometers to Taksim. If you are going to stay in Kadıköy, Üsküdar or the Anatolian side, SAW; For many parts of the European side, IST may be a more natural start. Selection by accommodation area
- For Kadıköy, Moda, Bostancı or Pendik, SAW usually provides a more direct connection.
- IST may be strong due to M11 connectivity around Şişli, Levent and Gayrettepe.
- For Sultanahmet and Karaköy, transfers are required at both airports; Compare flight time and total time.
- Allow for heavy traffic when crossing the Bosphorus by road.
Converting ticket price to total cost
Add to the comparison the baggage fee, airport transfer, additional cost for the night, and the time until you reach the hotel. While the SAW ticket is cheap, if the accommodation is in the west of the European side, the long transfer may erase the advantage. The opposite is also true for the Anatolian side.
Night and early morning flights
