These times start from the moment you reach the airport; when you work backwards from leaving home, add slack for traffic. On very early flights, factor in that public transport may not have started yet — that is the most common mistake on 06:00 departures.
How does the day of travel actually unfold?
- Online check-in: usually opens 24-48 hours before departure. Do it and you skip the desk queue entirely.
- Bag drop: mandatory if you have a suitcase. It typically closes 45-60 minutes before departure and is not flexible.
- Security: can take 5 minutes or 45, depending on the time of day. 06:00-09:00 and 17:00-20:00 are the busiest windows.
- Passport control: a separate queue on international flights; at busy times it can take 30 minutes.

What does online check-in actually save you?

- Some low-cost airlines charge a steep airport fee if you have not checked in online; look for this in the fare conditions.
- Download the boarding pass to your phone and take a screenshot. A terminal with no signal, or an app that will not open, is always possible.
- Some countries still ask for a printed boarding pass on arrival; on a critical flight, carrying a copy does no harm.
- If seat selection is free, check in the moment it opens; leave it late and families get split.
Timing a connecting flight
On a connection the real question is not when you arrived at the airport, but how much slack you left between the two flights. On one ticket, 75-90 minutes is reasonable within Schengen and 2-3 hours on long-haul. On separate tickets you will need to collect and re-check bags, so leave at least 3 hours.
What should you do if you miss the flight?
First rule: do not leave the airport, and go straight to the airline desk. On a missed flight, time is your most valuable asset; dealing with it in the first hour is far cheaper than leaving it until the next day.
- If the delay is the airline's (a previous flight was late, and it is on the same ticket), you are put on the next departure at no extra cost.
- If you were late yourself, some airlines will move you to the next flight for a modest fee — usually far cheaper than buying a new ticket.
- If your fare is non-changeable you may have to buy a new ticket; still ask at the desk, because fare conditions are not always applied to the letter.
- Watch the return if it is on the same booking: if you do not take the outbound, the return can be cancelled automatically. Confirm this.
