Travelling to Europe with a pet: microchip to health certificate
Pet travel is more than reserving a place on the aircraft. Microchip, vaccination, laboratory test and official certificate must be completed in the right order.

Non-commercial travel from Türkiye to the European Union with a dog, cat or ferret requires identification, rabies protection and official documentation in the correct sequence. Buying a flight does not satisfy health rules, and airline acceptance does not guarantee entry at the border.
Start months ahead. Testing and waiting periods after a primary rabies vaccination mean this is not a last-week task. Also verify the separate requirements for returning to Türkiye through the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Rabies antibody testing and the wait
Where titration is required from a non-EU origin, an authorised vet takes the sample at least 30 days after primary rabies vaccination and a designated laboratory tests it. After a satisfactory result, a three-month wait runs from the sampling date. The test may not need repeating if boosters preserve an uninterrupted valid vaccination series.
The system depends on EU legislation and country lists updated in 2026. Recheck Türkiye's current status, the accepted laboratory and certificate model on official pages before starting.
Health certificate and point of entry
Entry from a non-EU country requires an EU animal health certificate and a declaration that the movement is non-commercial. The certificate is issued or endorsed by an official veterinarian and is valid for ten days from issue for entry checks; sea travel can extend that window by the voyage duration.
The pet may need to pass through a designated travellers' point of entry and be presented to the authority. Confirm that your chosen airport or border crossing appears on the current list before booking.
Extra dog treatment for some destinations
Dogs travelling to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland require treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis 24 to 120 hours before travel, recorded in the certificate. The same requirement does not apply to cats and ferrets.
Airline booking is a separate step
Airlines set their own limits for cabin or hold carriage, container size, combined weight, breeds, temperature and animals per flight. Obtain written confirmation that the chosen service has space before purchasing the human ticket.
