Guide to choosing travel insurance: what to look for in a policy?
It is not the name of the policy, but the coverage limit, exclusions and documents requested at the time of damage that are useful. Read the four sections before purchasing.

Travel insurance is not a one-size-fits-all product. A policy that meets the minimum requirement for a visa application may not cover expensive equipment, skiing or pre-existing conditions. Make the comparison from the coverage table and exclusions, not the policy name.
While public health access documents such as the European Health Insurance Card are useful for eligible individuals, they do not cover all risks such as private treatment, repatriation or lost property; Do not assume it is a substitute for travel insurance.
Four basic guarantees
| Title | Control |
|---|---|
| medical expense | Limit, hospital network, direct payment |
| Cancellation/interruption | Accepted reasons and document |
| Luggage | Limit and delay time per item |
| Responsibility | Coverage of damage to third parties |
Read the exceptions
- Pre-existing diseases.
- Alcohol or risky behavior related events.
- Skiing, diving and motor sports.
- Item left unattended.
- Regions visited despite official warning.
Exemption and direct payment
The deductible means you pay for a portion of the damage. A very cheap policy may carry a high deductible. Find out if the hospital is paid directly in case of emergency or if you have to pay first and provide documentation.
Document layout in case of damage
- Call the helpline as early as possible.
- Obtain a police, airline or medical report.
- Keep the original/digital copy of invoices and receipts.
- Note the date and time of the incident and the person you spoke to.
time to purchase
Check the date from which the cancellation cover starts; A policy purchased too close to the trip may not cover a reason that has occurred before. Errors in country, date and passenger information may affect coverage.
Keep planning
