Aedes mosquitoes can bite during both day and night, so dengue prevention cannot be limited to sleeping under a net.

Dengue is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. Because they can bite by day and night, accommodation, clothing and repellent need to work throughout the day.

Use the mosquito prevention guide and prepare fever response with the travel emergency guide.

Check current risk before departure

Do not plan as though one widely available dengue vaccine covers all travellers. Eligibility can depend on country, age, residence and documented previous infection.

  • Open the official destination health page.
  • Check current outbreak and travel notices.
  • Pack enough effective repellent.
  • Choose air-conditioned or well-screened accommodation.

Keep protection active during the day

Apply repellent according to its label, wear loose long clothing and reduce mosquito entry. If using sunscreen too, check product instructions for application order.

Monitor symptoms and bites after returning

Seek care for fever or compatible symptoms and give the travel location. CDC advises travellers returning from a dengue-risk area to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks, even if they feel well.
