How to spot a fake ticket? Protection from event fraud

Ticket fraud has changed its form in recent years. No one sells poorly printed paper tickets anymore; What is sold is often a screenshot of an actual ticket. The same QR code is sold to five different people, the first person to scan it at the door gets in, the remaining four stay out. Since the code itself is not fake, it is almost impossible for the recipient to figure it out in advance.

Therefore, the way to protect yourself is not to "examine" the ticket, but to check where the ticket was purchased. Below are common methods, warning signs, and which way gives you a real refund when paying.

The four most common methods

1. Multiple selling: A PDF or screenshot of an actual ticket is sold to multiple people. The first one read at the door is valid. This is the dominant method of individual shopping via social media.
2. Copy site: A domain name that is very similar to the name and design of the official seller is established, and it is promoted to the top by advertising in search engines. Payment is taken, the ticket never arrives or an invalid code is sent.
3. Non-existent tickets: "I have too many tickets" ads that appear immediately after the event is sold out. Payment is usually requested via an irreversible method and the account is closed within a few days.
4. Fake refund/transfer: Someone who actually has a ticket sends you a fake email pretending to make an official transfer. The link goes to a page that steals your login information.

Payment method, half the protection

Even if you buy the same ticket from the same person, how you pay will determine what you have left if something goes wrong.

• Credit card: If the goods or services are not delivered, you can initiate an objection process through your bank. This is the strongest protection for individual purchases.
• Buyer-protected payment systems: refund process is processed in case of dispute; However, transfers made with the “send to a friend” option are excluded from this protection and scammers want exactly this option.
• Wire transfer, EFT and crypto: no return. If a seller persistently wants these methods, the only correct course of action is to give up.
• Cash on delivery: there is no way to verify the validity of tickets sold in front of the venue; Once inside you cannot get the money back.

Last check before going to the door

• Check from the platform's own application whether the ticket is registered in your name; The live ticket in the application is valid, not the screenshot.
• In many events, the QR code is refreshed periodically. If your code is a static image and never changes, this ticket probably hasn't been pushed.
• For events that require identification, your ID must match the name on the ticket. Tickets issued in someone else's name will not be accepted at the door.
• Get to the gate early. If there is a problem, you have time to look for a solution at the box office; The box office usually closes after the concert starts.

What to do if you've been scammed?

1. Save all correspondence, ad screen, payment receipt and seller profile with screenshot; The account can be deleted within a few hours.
2. If you paid by credit card, notify your bank of objection on the same day; It is a process with short durations.
3. Open a dispute through the payment platform.
4. Complain to the platform where the ad was published; The same profile may target other people as well.

If the event is canceled

If the event is canceled for tickets purchased through the official channel, the ticket price is usually automatically refunded; In case of postponement, the ticket is considered valid for the new date and a limited window is given to request a refund. Tickets purchased through an unauthorized channel have none of these rights, because you do not appear in the seller's record. Flight and accommodation are a separate issue and ticket refunds do not cover them; Choosing a flexible scheduled flight or a hotel with free cancellation is the only practical way to reduce this risk.

The event has dropped but you're already in town
