European Christmas markets: guide to choosing cities and dates
The Christmas market period is not a single month. Some markets open in November, some close before the holiday; Verify the dates from the official source every year.

A trip to the Christmas market is not just about seeing the decorated square. Markets, concerts and food stands of different sizes can be found in different neighborhoods of the city. Adding small neighborhood markets to the program as well as the most popular main square balances the experience.
Opening-closing dates, weekly days and holiday periods may change each year. Book the flight not through the market name, but through the official calendar of the municipality or tourism office for that year.
city selection
| city/region | Character | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Lots of inner city markets | Region by region by public transport |
| Berlin | Themed and dispersed markets | Two regions on the same evening |
| Prague | Compact historical center | Early hours on weekdays |
| Budapest | Center + thermal bath | Combining it with a winter city break |
| alsace | town oriented | Plan train/car and accommodation early |
Weekday or weekend?
Main markets and transportation may be busier on the weekend. If possible, see the market on a weekday in the late afternoon; The lights are on, but the busiest hour of the evening has not begun.
Budget and payment
- Ask about the cup/deposit system.
- Carry limited local currency for the small booth that requires cash.
- Don't buy the big tasting menu without seeing the price.
- Calculate the free market's paid Ferris wheel or concerts separately.
Safety and comfort
- Carry the bag closed and in front in crowds.
- Do not underestimate the alcohol content in hot drinks.
- Wear shoes suitable for slippery surfaces.
- Determine a meeting point with the children.
Two-city market route
It may be possible to connect nearby cities by train, but check for the last train and station walk after Sunday close. It is often more comfortable to stay in one center and make a short day trip instead of moving to a different hotel every night.
Keep planning
