Renting a car abroad: from contract to return checklist
The daily rate is not the full comparison. Deposit, excess, fuel, mileage and cross-border charges can change the real cost.

The lowest daily rate rarely shows the full rental cost. Airport fees, additional drivers, one-way returns, mileage, fuel policy, winter equipment and insurance excess can turn two similar cars into very different purchases.
A booking platform may find the car, but the rental company supplying it usually performs the contract. Compare the booking summary with the desk agreement line by line before taking the keys.
Licence and driver requirements
Check with an official authority whether your domestic licence is valid in the destination. If an International Driving Permit is required, remember that it does not normally replace the original licence; you carry both. A rental company may impose stricter age, licence-history or payment-card conditions than national law.
- Validity of the main and additional drivers' licences.
- Need for an International Driving Permit or certified translation.
- Minimum age and young/senior driver charges.
- Accepted payment card in the lead driver's name.

Read the insurance language carefully
A collision damage waiver or similarly named package may not mean zero liability for every kind of damage. Tyres, glass, roof, underbody, keys, misfuelling and unauthorised roads can be excluded. Read the excess and required accident documents in the contract.
If card or third-party cover works by reimbursement, the rental company may charge you first. Confirm in writing that the policy covers the country, vehicle class and driver.
If you plan to cross a border
Tell the rental company at booking if you will take the car into another country. Permitted countries, fees, insurance, roadside assistance and documents can differ. Get permission for ferries, border crossings and one-way international returns in writing.
Create a record at pickup and return
- Take time-stamped photos or video of every side, glass, wheels, roof and interior.
- Make sure existing damage appears on the condition report.
- Photograph the fuel and mileage readings.
- Save the emergency number, accident procedure and roadside-assistance terms.
- Keep the return confirmation or key-drop evidence and final invoice.
Local road rules before departure
Tolls, low-emission stickers, city restrictions, winter tyres and child restraints can vary by country and region. The rental company can help, but the driver remains responsible for checking current official traffic rules.
