Formed in Columbus, Ohio, Twenty One Pilots is a two-piece: Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. They still play arenas and stadiums, and they solve the scale problem with stage design, lighting and constant movement.

Every album builds its own conceptual world and the tour is designed in that world's stage language. That makes the tour name and album era the single most useful piece of information about what you will see. A portion of the set is always given over to earlier eras.

Achievements and milestones

  • Won a Grammy Award for Stressed Out.
  • Blurryface became one of the record-setting alternative albums on streaming platforms.
  • Reached arena and stadium scale as a two-piece.
  • Built a continuing conceptual narrative across their albums.
  • Headlined major festivals in Europe and North America.

How a two-piece fills the stage

Two people move constantly: Tyler Joseph switches between keys, bass and ukulele while Josh Dun's drum kit relocates more than once during the show. The sections where the kit is carried to the middle of the room, or over the crowd, are a signature moment.

That movement weakens the idea of a single best seat. For part of the show the area behind the stage becomes the focus, for another part the middle of the room does.

  • The band is two people; the stage is filled with instrument switches.
  • The drum kit relocates mid-show, some sections happen in the middle of the room.
  • B-stage sections are used more than once in the set.
  • The main performance runs about two hours.

Album eras and the shape of the set

Whichever album era the tour belongs to carries the body of the set. Even so, Stressed Out, Ride, Heathens and Car Radio are played almost every night regardless of era.

Mid-set there is usually an acoustic or stripped-back block with short passes through older songs. Because that block changes nightly, two shows on the same tour differ.

Twenty One Pilots upcoming dates

The crowd and concert day

The audience skews young and is extremely participatory; the choruses are carried almost entirely by the crowd. Queue culture is strong, and a line for the barrier can form hours before doors.

European dates are mostly arena-scale and run through the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France. The North American leg is longer and covers far more cities.

What to know before you go

  • The kit and the staging move during the show; do not pick a seat locked to one direction.
  • A queue for the barrier can form hours before doors open.
  • The body of the set comes from the current album, but the classics still get played.
  • The choruses are sung by the crowd; knowing the words helps.
  • European arena dates offer a tighter programme than the North American leg.

How to plan travel around the concert

If you are flying abroad for a Twenty One Pilots show, the order should be: buy the ticket first, search for flights only once you have it, and stay in a neighbourhood 20–30 minutes from the venue by public transport. Plan to be in the city at least a day before; a morning-of flight that runs late means missing the show.

If the same tour has several European stops, compare the combined cost of ticket, flights and two nights' stay across three cities. London, Paris and Amsterdam sell out fastest and cost the most; Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, Prague and Budapest are usually easier for tickets and noticeably cheaper overall.

Keep planning

Frequently asked questions

Is the band really just two people?

Yes. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are the two on stage. The scale is held together by instrument switches, stage design and lighting; some tours add off-stage support musicians.

Which category is best?

Because the staging moves through the room, categories locked to one direction can lose out. Mid-level blocks with a wide view of the room are a balanced choice, while the floor is the most participatory experience.

Do they play the older songs?

Yes. Even when the current album carries the set, songs like Stressed Out, Ride and Heathens stay in the repertoire, and there is a stripped-back mid-set block devoted to older material.
