Formed in 1994 in Teignmouth, in the south-west of England, Muse carved out their own space by combining alternative rock with classical music and electronic production. Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations took the band to arena scale; The Resistance and Drones took them into stadiums.

The most talked-about part of a Muse show is the stage production. Each tour is built around a concept, and the stage visualises that concept: giant LED walls, figures moving above the stage, drones flying over the crowd. That also directly affects where you should sit.

Achievements and milestones

  • Won the Grammy for Best Rock Album twice, with The Resistance and Drones.
  • Won Best Live Act at the Brit Awards.
  • One of the bands cited as a reference in the live-music industry for stage production.
  • Carved out their own space by combining alternative rock with classical music and electronic production.

A production-led tour structure

The band redesigns the stage for every album cycle. On some tours the stage is in the round at 360 degrees; on others a giant screen wall runs the length of the stadium. The images released in the tour campaign usually make the layout obvious.

That production density makes stand choice important. Seeing the lighting and screen design as a whole is more satisfying for most people than standing very close to the stage on the floor.

Repertoire and how the show flows

The setlist balances classics such as Knights of Cydonia, Hysteria, Uprising, Starlight, Plug In Baby and Supermassive Black Hole with current-album tracks. The band also plays long instrumental passages and riff improvisations live; those sections do not appear on the records.

The show usually runs about two hours and the tempo stays high.

Choosing a city

Muse does both arena and stadium tours and stops in a large number of European cities. Arena tours have noticeably better sound; stadium tours have a much larger production. Which you prefer depends on what you want from the night.

What to know before you go

  • Production is at the centre of the show; the opposite stand is more satisfying for most people than the floor.
  • Tour campaign images give away the stage layout in advance — look before you buy tickets.
  • Arena tours emphasise sound quality; stadium tours emphasise production scale.
  • The set runs about two hours and starts on time.
  • Lighting and lasers are intense; the upper stand is more comfortable if you are sensitive to that.

How to plan travel around the concert

If you are flying abroad for a Muse show, the order should be: buy the ticket first, search for flights only once you have it, and stay in a neighbourhood 20–30 minutes from the venue by public transport. Plan to be in the city at least a day before; a morning-of flight that runs late means missing the show.

If the same tour has several European stops, compare the combined cost of ticket, flights and two nights' stay across three cities. London, Paris and Amsterdam sell out fastest and cost the most; Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, Prague and Budapest are usually easier for tickets and noticeably cheaper overall.

Keep planning

Frequently asked questions

Floor or stands at a Muse concert?

Because production is at the centre of the show, the opposite lower stand usually offers a more satisfying experience. On tours that use a centre stage, the floor becomes the better option.

Should you pick an arena or a stadium show?

Arena shows have better sound and you are closer to the stage. Stadium shows have a much larger production. Choose according to what you want from the night.

How long is the show?

The main set runs about two hours. With support, plan on a three-hour programme.
