Formed in England in 1968, Deep Purple is counted among the founding bands of hard rock. Smoke on the Water and Highway Star from Machine Head are among the best-known tracks in the genre.

The band still tours Europe regularly with a line-up that includes founding drummer Ian Paice. What sets the shows apart are the long instrumental passages placed between songs: the exchanges between organ and guitar take up a significant part of the night.

Set structure and solo sections

The set is not classics only; tracks from the recent albums are played regularly. The organ and guitar solos placed between songs take up a significant part of the night. Treat them as the main event rather than an interlude.

That structure also stretches the running time: the show usually approaches two hours. A seated ticket is noticeably more comfortable than standing through the long instrumental passages.

  • The show runs close to two hours.
  • Seated tickets are a good choice on this tour.

Tickets and the tour route

European legs start in Central Europe and finish in the British Isles after Scandinavia and the Benelux. Venues are mid-sized; the band does not play stadium scale.

Tickets are easy to find and the price range is wide. Paying for the front rows does not return as much as on other big rock tours because the stage production is plain; centre-block seats usually give the best price-to-experience balance.

Volume and crowd

The shows are known for being loud; bringing earplugs is a reasonable precaution. The crowd covers a wide age range and the floor is far calmer than at other hard rock shows — do not go expecting a mosh pit.

How to plan travel around the concert

If you are flying abroad for a Deep Purple show, the order should be: buy the ticket first, search for flights only once you have it, and stay in a neighbourhood 20–30 minutes from the venue by public transport. Plan to be in the city at least a day before; a morning-of flight that runs late means missing the show.

If the same tour has several European stops, compare the combined cost of ticket, flights and two nights' stay across three cities. London, Paris and Amsterdam sell out fastest and cost the most; Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, Prague and Budapest are usually easier for tickets and noticeably cheaper overall.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the show?

Close to two hours. The long organ and guitar solos between songs stretch the running time.

Is a front-row ticket worth it?

Usually not. The stage production is plain, so centre-block seats give better sound balance for less money.

Are tickets hard to get?

No. The venues are mid-sized but demand is not as sudden as on big pop tours; tickets stay available long after general on-sale.
