European night trains: choice of seats, couchettes and sleepers

The night train makes up for a hotel night only if the right category is chosen. A regular seat and a sleeper compartment are not the same experience.

Scenic passenger train on European railway

Night trains are an effective way to leave the city center in the evening and arrive at another center the next morning. But the 'night train ticket' covers different comfort classes: the difference in sleep, privacy and price between a regular seat, a bunkhouse and a compartment with a private bed is huge.

Lines, operating days and wagon types may change seasonally. Plan the trip based on the official operator schedule on your chosen date, not just the general route map.

Reservation and ticket

Night train reservations may also be mandatory even if you use a pass or rail card. The same train may appear with different train numbers in different countries. Double check the date, departure station and arrival day; Date confusion is common at stops after midnight.

Border control and documents

On international night trains, passport or ID checks can be done at night. Keep the document in an accessible but safe place. If staff is temporarily collecting the document, ask about the official procedure and when it will be returned.

luggage security

  • Keep valuables in a small bag with you.
  • Learn the locking pattern of the compartment door.
  • Place large luggage so that it does not block the aisle.
  • Check all shelves and under beds before landing.

Preparation for a good night

  • Take water and a light snack; Food service is not available on all lines.
  • Carry earplugs and an eye mask.
  • Set an alarm before your morning arrival.
  • Look for early open luggage storage or hotel drop-off options at the arrival station.

Keep planning

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep in a regular seat on a night train?

It is possible, but privacy and sleeping comfort are limited. If you have a busy schedule the next day, a bunk bed or bed option would be more realistic.

Does Interrail/Eurail cover night trains?

The pass may entitle you to travel, but many night trains also require a paid reservation. Check the current condition of your chosen sailing.
