The midseason is not automatically cheap and empty. A fair, school holiday or local festival can turn a weekend into high season.

Calm city view of Český Krumlov in the mid season

The mid-season is the transition between peak summer/winter demand and low season. More moderate crowd and sometimes can offer better price; In turn, it brings weather variability and seasonal operating uncertainty.

Every destination's midseason is different. The Mediterranean coast, the ski town and the major capital are not evaluated on the same calendar.

Mid-season advantage and cost

AdvantageOpposite
Quieter main pointsvariable weather
Flexible accommodation opportunitySeasonal closing
More casual restaurant/museumThere may be short daylight
Approaching the local rhythmDecreased transportation trips

How to choose the date?

  • Local school and public holidays.
  • Fair, congress, festival and match.
  • Ferry/cable car season.
  • Museum maintenance and closing days.
  • Current weather trend instead of ten-year average.

Flexible booking

While the mid-season price is attractive, purchasing a fully non-refundable package leaves you with the risk of weather or seasonal closures. If the price difference is reasonable, consider replaceable transportation and refundable accommodation.

Coastal and island routes

Seaside restaurants, boats and public transportation may operate less frequently than in summer. Even if the accommodation is open, verify the status of surrounding services separately. Don't base your seaside holiday expectations solely on the air temperature.

Mid-season during city break

Larger cities are more resistant to seasonal changes in terms of museums, public transportation and events. For the first mid-season trial, cities with strong indoor alternatives such as Lisbon, Berlin, Vienna or Budapest are safer choices.
