Rental-car deposits and credit cards: a counter-desk guide
The rental price you paid online may not include the deposit blocked at the desk. Read the card and contract terms first.
Prepared by the FlyVentis editorial team and regularly reviewed for travel and event accuracy.

The rental price and the security deposit blocked on a card are not the same line item. Even on a prepaid booking, the desk may require a suitable card in the main driver's name, enough available limit and a PIN; if the condition is not met, the car may not be released. Complete the other booking steps with the car hire abroad guide.
There is no single EU-wide rulebook for car rental, but core consumer rights such as clear information, fair contracts and dispute resolution still apply. Set out the border crossings on your route; do not assume an automatic 14-day withdrawal right on a car reserved for a specific date.
Read the card condition before you book
- Check whether the card must be in the main driver's name.
- Confirm in writing the distinction between credit, debit and prepaid cards.
- Ask the deposit amount and the estimated release time.
- Check that the physical card must be presented, plus PIN and overseas-transaction permission.
- Leave enough available limit separate from the rental charge.
Do not confuse the deposit with insurance
Buying extra insurance does not always zero the deposit. Excess, tyre-glass-undercarriage exclusions, wrong fuel, key loss and roadside assistance can sit in separate clauses. A reimbursement policy from another provider may also leave the desk hold in place; you may have to pay first and claim afterwards.
| Item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Deposit | How much will be blocked on the card, and in which currency? |
| Excess | What is your maximum liability in a damage case? |
| Fuel | Full-to-full, prepaid, or a service fee? |
| Mileage | Unlimited, or a daily limit and overage charge? |
Create evidence when you collect
- Video the car from every side, including wheels and glass.
- Check that existing damage is marked on the handover form.
- Photograph the fuel and mileage displays.
- Save the emergency number and accident procedure.
- Have border-crossing and additional-driver permission added to the contract.
Return and closing the hold
Where possible, return the car during opening hours and get a signed damage-free return document. If you have to drop the key in a box, record the car's location, time, fuel and exterior in one continuous clip. If the hold is not released, send the bank transaction, contract and return evidence; support the payment plan with the card and cash guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rental-car deposit included in the hire price?
It is usually a separate security hold. The amount and card condition vary with the rental company, car group and cover.
Can you hire a car with a debit card?
Some companies accept it; others require a credit card in the main driver's name. Check the delivering company's condition in writing.
Does extra insurance remove the deposit?
Not always. Where the insurance was bought and the rental company's deposit policy are assessed separately.
