Roaming and mobile data in Europe: how to avoid a surprise bill
The right to use a domestic tariff in the EU does not apply to every SIM. Travellers with a Türkiye number need to check their plan separately.

The EU Roam Like at Home regime generally charges calls, SMS and data at domestic rates when a regulated mobile line from one covered country is used on a periodic trip in another covered country. If you are travelling on a Türkiye line, check the operator's country list, when a daily pack is triggered, overage charges and the pack's time zone in writing. Add every country you will visit or transit to the connectivity plan.

Fair use does not mean unlimited data
On unlimited or very low-unit-price EU tariffs, the operator can still set a fair-use cap on roaming data. The limit should appear in the contract and in the information message sent when you cross a border. If over a four-month period you stay mainly abroad and also use the service mainly abroad, the operator may ask for an explanation.
Watch satellite networks on planes and ships
At sea or in flight, a phone can attach to a non-terrestrial satellite network. Those networks are not covered by Roam Like at Home and can generate high charges. Keep aeroplane mode on; on a ship, consider turning mobile data off and using only verified Wi-Fi.
- Turn off automatic network selection when needed.
- Pause background photo backups and app updates.
- Download maps, tickets and hotel addresses for offline use.
- Set a data warning and a spending limit.
Build the connection plan in two layers

Does a Türkiye SIM get free roaming in Europe?
No. The EU Roam Like at Home right does not apply automatically to a Türkiye SIM. Check your operator's pack and country conditions.

Why can a phone join an expensive network on a ship?
